Recently I've changed my old mobile SE K800 to Nokia 5800. Thanks Dewi for the screen protector ! :)
I was actually waiting for the Nokia E71. Didn't even know this phone was out until I found out on the website. Changed my mind on the spot and sign up the phone the next day. Haven't regretted after using for a few weeks, and more importantly, the phone hasn't crashed at all (unbelievable for a modern Nokia phone)!
This is my first touch screen mobile, getting more used to it as the phone has only 3 main buttons. Below are some of my thoughts:
Pros
Nokia Comes With Music - What really impressed me wasn't actually the phone itself, but rather the "Nokia Comes With Music" - unlimited music downloads for 1 year. Yeah I know the DRM thing is stupid but unlimited downloads ? I can live with that. note: there are some websites that claim it's not "unlimited", only 120 songs per year. But looking at my Nokia Music, I've already downloaded 226 tracks...
Free 8GB memory card - Isn't this sweet? Would be even better if's internal though..
Touch screen sensitivity is ok
Message typing is quite good among the touch screen mobiles as you can choose several input choice from old school to qwerty style keyboard
Phone is lightweight - But beware, it's a little flimsy, one drop... R.I.P.
Standard data connectivity - WLAN/Bluetooth/USB etc
Internet browsing is quite good (but not the browser)
Cons
Most of the times, you'll need to nagivate through a lot of screens to achieve one thing. I'm not a fan of Nokia navigation interface and this haven't changed for yaers.
The casing provided is really hard to use
This phone is supposed to be a portable entertainment device, but the side volume adjust button is not usable when the phone is being locked. You'll need to unlock the phone to adjust the volume.
Blinking/phantom windows appearing and disappearing between applications.
File manager - how could you call it a "manager" if it doesn't even support one of the most needed multiple item selection function ? ie, if you need to move 10 files from one folder to another, good luck on that because you'll need to move one by one, for 10 times.
No one-button-access to display current running applications.
Making a call and contact browsing is really not user-friendly.
The call button (green) displays outgoing/incoming/missed calls separately, would be nice to have another section that combines all 3 categories. It's handy when you want to make a call quick without too much finger-touching.
Gallery/Media browsing - really really crappy and wouldn't want to comment more.
Music player - If you un-plug the earphone while playing a song, it automatically continue to play out on speakers.
Camera - Don't expect too much, don't even expect it to be average. My SE K800 camera phone is almost 3 years old now, but the camera quality is far more superior than this Nokia 5800.
The headset - The cable is a bit too long ? That could get a person hang dead if it's not used properly...
Overall, the phone is quite good (along with the bundles). Forget about this if you're looking for a average camera phone.
The Nokia 5800 has other name - the "iPhone Killer" but I guess iPhone still stands out easily. However, given this is just the first generation of touch screen phones from Nokia, the potential to be able to compete more with iPhone in future is undeniable.
I've killed some time playing worms 2007 on my K800 last night. You can download the game here. It was fun for a few hours but you gotna stop unless you're playing with a magnifier =)
ZINK company is going to release its first product, a "zero ink" portable printer. It uses dye embedded paper inside of a pocket-sized printer to do wallet sized prints (borderless 2x3). And it's not affected by gravity !!!
The special paper, or so called the ZINK paper, is a advanced composite material with dye crystals embedded inside and a protective polymer overcoat layer outside. Just like what every company will do, the ZINK paper is patented.
The printer accepts transfers by Bluetooth, images of up to (maybe beyond, 3MP), downscales them internally, and pushes out prints via a simple roller. The 2x3-inch, 300 DPI shots look fantastic.
Pricing on paper is approximately 20 cents on a on a 2x3. The printer's battery lasts 20 prints per charge, and juices by USB. The internal paper tray will hold 10. Prints take for about a minute to finish from send (video after the jump). Prints are water resistant and durable enough for wallet duty, which is appropriate for a print of this size. It's sold for US $99.
According to the Zink's website, its says it only supports bluetooth and USB connection. I would prefer if it can support infrared as well, since there are still many handphones in the market that didn't equipped with bluetooth.
I signed up the Sony Ericsson K800i phone from Three on Monday. The sign up process for 3 is so lame and being a customer, I would like to say: "3, YOU SUCKED, BIG TIME !".
The first time I went to the 3 shop was last Sunday. I brought the documents that they needed, however, near to end of sign up, I was asked for my working and company details. Thet said an operator from 3 will ring up my company to verify if I'm really working in there or not. WTF ?! screw that.... That was Sunday ! who will stay in office on Sunday to answer call ? So they can't verify that. As an alternative for that, they wanted my company's manager's name card with his mobile number printed on it. They'll ring my manager on his mobile... again, WTF ??! Give me a reason and persuade me why I should carry my manager's name card all the time with me... So after wasted 1 hr in the shop, I left with empty hands. Then I drop by 3 shop the next day (Monday), and they finally can ring somebody in my company to verify it. I picked up the phone after work, thinking everything should be over.. and bam ! The girl in 3 shop forget to activate my phone number... I got a new phone but I can't make any calls...thanks for that, the 3rd WTF ???! goes here... Because it's after hours, I have to ring back first thing in the next morning (yesterday) to get them finish what they left over.... WTF !!!!!
Anyway, the phone is great. After playing with phone for a day, below are some of the pros and cons that I still remember...
Pros
Great imaging quality (still picture)
Better than average features/functions
Installation of SE Phone Manager on Windows doesn't cause me any troubles (I once helped a friend to install a LG pc suit on windows..pain in the ass...)
Display screen is very clear
Navigation system is still consider better than average. I'm still able to pick up the navigation style pretty quick after I switch over to this phone, considering the fact that I've been using Nokia phones for past 5 years.
Phone is light weight
Any other thing is good except listed below
Cons
The recording quality is way to small and pixelize
Phone battery doesn't seem to last that long like what they advertised
Keypard is a little too small to press
Not sure if I'm not used to the joystick style navigation or they're a bit hard to use
Auto key-lock activates too fast. A user define auto lock time would be great.
The cover that protects the camera lens seems a bit fragile
Contacts storing is a bit confusing between storing in phone or USIM
Size is a bit bulky but not a big problem
1Gb M2 memory card is still hard to get (expensive too...)
Blog this picture feature only limits to Blogger.com ... bugga !
No chinese input for messaging (not sure if firmware update can solve this or not on International version, since China has their own K800C)
I still need to master the skill of text input for messaging on this phone, it's just a matter of time... Below are pictures of my old Nokia 8210 and the new Sony Ericsson K800I
Sony Ericsson K800I VS Nokia 8210
Sony Ericsson K800i in my hand
2 pictures taken from K800i indoor in night time (Xenon flash kick ass !). The thumbnails are rotated but not the originals.
A can of coke on dining table
Bag and box from 3
I found that there is a green line on the screen during video recording mode. Googled it on the web and realize it's a bug from SE, many people having this problem too. They all suggest/waiting for SE to release a firmware to fix the problem but nobody claims that he/she found a way to fix the problem until now. This is a obvious bug, can't believe SE just let this passes by. Anyway, I'll bring this phone back to 3 shop tomorrow and try to get a replacement, at the same time to collect my 100 free tickets for digital printing =)
I've been checking out this phone lately, Sony Ericsson K800, after I decided not to go for Nokia 6280 two months ago. It's hot on the shelves now just like when Nokia 6280 first came out.
Sony Ericsson K800
Sony Ericsson K800, this phone is highly advertised with "I'm with Cyber Shot, please take me home !". Well, the phone is equipped with a 3.2 megapixel Cyber-shot™ camera with autofocus. Opps... did I forget to mention it comes with Xenon flash too? This is a nice phone with nice feature that I've been waiting since Nokia 6280, which has poor imaging quality. I've checked alot of sites with heaps of reviews, everything sounds so nice until I found out that SE K800 records video in QCIF (176 x 144 pixels) resolution only. Don't know what QCIF means ? Never mind, but you should know what 176 x 144 pixel means... You don't want to capture some moments that's funny/shocking/precious in just a tiny 176x144 video format, that sucks ! Why can't a good phone with all those nice feature be perfect ? I don't mind to wait longer or pay a little more if for better video recording quality. Just wondering if the engineers in SE have guns pointed at them in order to push this phone out to market...
Sony Ericsson K800 with CyberShot
Personally I don't really care whether the phone is "candybar", flip, slide, or even 360 degree turnable design. So the SE K800 is still acceptable to me but hey, 105 x 47 x 22 mm is a bit too "bricky" for me to fit in my pocket if I'm wearing a jeans (out of topic, although lately I don't put my phone in bottom's pockets because I heard it will affect that thing...) The phone is consider light weight despite the size of the phone.
I still can't make up my mind to own it or just wait for another phone. Overall, this is a great phone, just that I'm not happy with the video recording... geez... how much longer I need to wait for a perfect phone before I can put my Nokia 8210 up on eBay...
