Gamers, keep an eye on your health - 12:37 pm
Personal - DaRen
Hardcore gamers don't have healthy lifestyle? Well, I don't dare to call myself as a hardcore gamer, but I can spend up to 14 hrs a day in weekends doing hardcore leveling for my character in online games. I'm not alone, most of the party members I party with seems to stay as long as I do.
So, long hours of gaming will bring your health down? My answer is "it depends" ! If you're on a holiday or student life, then it is fine. Most of the time you got 24hrs free =) But it will not work if you're working. On weekdays I work 9-5, then I started to play from 7 to midnight... then after 1 to 2 weeks I finally fell sick :S I don't feel good since yesterday, well actually sine last Sunday. First I got 2 teeth gum pain, then headache and a slight fever yesterday, followed by a sore throat today. Colleague says I look sick 2 days ago.. and now I'm sick ! I'm guessing the main cause of this is the lack of rest and sleep.
But thank god that my character just leveled last night =) So I'll have some rest tonight, then I'll own some fast ass 2hand knight and archers on the weekends ^^ hmm... probably I'll finish what I left half way on the site updates on this weekend.

Bad day in KalOnline - 10:48 pm
did I just mentioned "die" ?
Gaming , Personal - DaRen
Lost interest of playing tonight. Just bought a rebirth scroll and revive myself, then I died again 1 hr later due to connection lost with server. I'm not sure it's the router problem or ISP site... but no mood to play anymore... although I got a ring and a ToW 4/1 Int but that still can't cover the lost... not even half of the lost... I swear I'll get a dedicated line and a good router only for myself... line sharing ? screw that... damnit...
Oh well, it's not everything that's bad in that 1 hr. At least I got the chance to witness the kerpal, the top ranking player in Hanin server, who is ranked #6 atm, got owned by Demon Monster (aka ugly key keeper) in D4 floor 1 in front of me... hehe.. see below:
 kerpal (lvl 69) owned by Demon Monster
I'm just lvl 57, kerpal's lvl is 69, and he still dies ugly... got the point? Mage is so fragile in Kal :S
Ran out of rebirths and $$$ in KalOnline - 9:24 pm
Too bad I can't rob banks in Kal...
Gaming , KalOnline - DaRen
Lately I'm not doing much of blogging activity because I've spent most of my spare time on KalOnline. I just finished up my 20 rebirth scrolls and I died again in D4 ( Advanced Demon Base) while Im doing drop hunting. I got owned by the Manager of Demon Worker as a result of trying to save a fat ass knight that got mobbed up... Being kind to other players will always lead you to death, I still don't learn from lessons... that sucks because 20 rebirth scrolls used in leveling 5 bars of exp is kinda lame... and most important.. that's 20m geons ! that is hell lots of money since Im not a CCFer ;)
I only have 2m at the time, that means if Im lucky, I can buy 2 rebirth scrolls.. if nobody sells cheaper, then I'll end up enough money to buy one... hehe... so I have to sell items on my other character, gather money and get my main character to revive ! after selling 200+ Eels, almost 300 speed meds, some revision stone, bunch of g46 gears and small amount of my talismans collection (omg...still feels pain in my heart whenever I think of this..my finest collection of talismans !) ... I now have 38,000,000 geons. That might seems like a big number in real life... but hell NO ! It equals to 38 rebirth scrolls or just a clean g50 stick... I'm still poor like before...
 Screen shot of my Mage character in D4, owned!
Oh well, story ends here. I need to go get myself revived and continue leveling... hope I can get some uber drops ^^

Beauty bonus - 5:38 pm
Are you handsome/pretty & tall ?
Funny Stuff , News - DaRen
Interesting article from The Sunday Times via News.com.au
Quote:
BEAUTY may be more than skin deep after all. New research suggests that good-looking people do better in exams and thus probably in later life, than the plain or downright ugly.
Some facts
Quote:
Previous research has shown that better-looking people have more success at job interviews and in finding a spouse.
Don't agree with that ? read more..
Quote:
A survey last year of 11,000 33-year-olds by London Metropolitan University found that unattractive men earned 15 per cent less than those who were deemed attractive, while plain women earned 11 per cent less than their prettier colleagues.
A recent study from the University of Florida and the University of North Carolina found that tall people earned $990 more a year than their shorter colleagues.
Research suggests that tall people do better in life because they are more likely to be chosen for positions of authority - prefects, head boys and head girls - when at school.
BitTorrent and NAT problem - 11:11 pm
Azureus : Smiley that looks green
Personal , Software - DaRen
I'm using Azureus lately to do Bittorrent download, and for those that have used Azureus before, you should be pretty faimilar with these 2 icons : and .
I never get a before since I started to use Azureus because I don't have "total control" of the router in the place where I stay previously. The previous housemates who own the router are just too scared to touch the router settings and hence, tweaking the router to speed up BT downloading is a forbidden area.
Well, I always thought that their reason is so funny... but, now I think that's reasonable because I just messed up the router's settings in the new place I stay right now and crippled the internet connection... lol... that sucks because obviously it's not my fault. The Belkin router is rebooted after I changed the settings, that's normal... but it's not when some of the WAN settings are lost after rebooting ! I was like.. OMG! this router is crap... how can the router make such stupid mistake ?
Everything is too late. So I have to ran to a place that has internet connection, searched for the ISP's DNS IP address and other settings info. The lucky thing is that, the username and password is still saved in the router. The router finally works after several dozens of rebooting. My piece of advise ? Remember your settings before rebooting your router ! I know information should not be deleted/lost after a rebooting process... but shit happens ! so watch out =)
Now instead of NAT Error, I have after configured the port forwarding thing. Download speed is significantly boosted by at least twice. So if you still have NAT problem, you should really configure your router... it really speeds you up =)
KalOnline... I'm back ! - 10:32 pm
Gaming , KalOnline , Personal - DaRen
After quiting playing KalOnline for almost 3 months, I removed the client files on my notebook. It's not because I'm no longer interested in it, it's because my client is too old to run the game. Kal got a major patch/update that my old client is no longer able to run... So I have to re-download the 300Mb client file and I'm running around D1 splashing doggebis and masks !
One thing amazed me is that, the economy for Hanin server is 1000% inflated !! If you can't imagine that, I'll fill you up... For example, a Rebirth Scroll which worth around 100k geons will now be sold like 1,000,000, which is 1kk = 1M .... WTF ??? Eels are sold around 7k each and now they're like 70k.. omg... that's so gay... Oh well, it's gay, but thinking on the other side, I stocked up quite alot of items that I bought before I quit... like EXP stones they're originally around 400k, now they worth 4m, moving scroll originally worth.. umm.. can't remember.. but they worth like 60k each.. and I have 560+ of them in my inventory... muahaha...
But the sad thing is... I'm a level 57 mage, and I'm still using my G46 armor pieces and G48 savage stick.. everytime I joined a party and I'll get all sorts of question "Wow, nice level.. where is your g50?" @#$^!& ... damnit.. don't I have rights to be poor in game even Im a high level mage ?
One thing that is pushing me to play is that those old ex-guildmates, they're were previously lower level than me... and now, they're in the server's top 100 ranking players ! If I didn't stop for that long, I guess I'll be in the top 100 as well... geez...
PHP class constructor - 12:33 am
Bug , Coding , PHP , Security , Site Issue - DaRen
I was doing some code clean up for my site and I found something interesting about the constructor in PHP class.
[ Hide ] <?php class Site { var $_DB; var $_User; function Site() { $this->_DB = new DB(); $this->_User = new User_Authentication(); } function process() { // some database access is needed in this function $this->_DB->query(); } } class DB { // ... some class implementation goes here ... } class User_Authentication { var $_local_DB; function User_Authentication() { // We reference to DB object in $SITE if exists, // otherwise we'll instantiate a new copy of DB locally if (isset($GLOBALS['mysite']->_DB )) $this->_local_DB =& $GLOBALS['mysite']->_DB; else $this->_local_DB = new DB(); // A test if the global var $mysite exists or not at this point echo isset($GLOBALS['mysite']) ? 'Var $mysite is there' : 'The global var $mysite does not exist !'; } function process() { // some database access is needed in this function $this->_local_db->query(); } } // Let's run the test ... $mysite = new Site(); // this will be a global variable ?>
Finish digesting the code ? Let's focus on Line 10 & 11:
10. $this->_DB = new DB();
11. $this->_User = new User_Authentication();
... and line 34 - 37
34. if (isset($GLOBALS['mysite']->_DB))
35. $this->_local_DB =& $GLOBALS['mysite']->_DB;
36. else
37. $this->_local_DB = new DB();
So you would thought that the global var $mysite->_DB is created before the new User_Authentication class is called. As a result, when it comes to line 34, the statement will valid and thus statement on line 35 will be carried out.
But the truth is opposite. You run the script and the output will be The global var $mysite does not exist !.
Why? The key to the problem is on line 11
$this->_User = new User_Authentication();
Although $this->_DB is created after line 10, but that does not mean $mysite->_DB, or even $mysite is listed in PHP defined variable list at that time.
That's because everything happens inside the scope of Site class's constructor. Object are considered 'defined' or 'instantiated' once the script execution exits the class constructor.
That's a hidden surprise if you're not careful enough =O

Review: Opera 9.0 - 9:39 pm
Browser , Software - DaRen
 Opera 9 showing this site I upgraded the Opera in my workstation's computer from v8 to v9, everything just works fine. It's great to see fast performance on that old, slow and half-way-to-trash-bin computer that runs on Win2000.
Beware though, you may need to becarefull if you want to do a clean installation. For my case, I uninstalled my Opera 8 to go for Opera 9 on my personal notebook. Some files are not removed/deleted and left behind in the "Opera" folder after the uninstallation. Those are your configuration files and the ones that are important to me is, Opera bookmark. I thought the installer will be smart enough to import the old bookmark if it found the opera6.adr file lying around in that folder. The fact is, it ignore it and overwrites it with a clean file. That would be disastrous if you didn't backup your bookmark. For my case, I'm lucky that I did backup before I uninstall it. For Opera Sessions, it's gone forever since Opera does not include functions to backup it.
Anyway, Opera 9 is the first windows-based web browser that passes Acid2 test. Opera 9 now comes with a command called opera:config that allows user to access some of the "hidden" settings for the program. Can't understand why it has to be that way...sort of "hidden" feature for power users only. Can't it be included in the normal preferences window ? The same question of mine goes to FireFox as well. Source code viewer ? hmm.. quite a simple one, not that great though. But I didn't expect it will highlight the source in detailed like other text editors does, it's just a web browser anyway, not a source code highlighter. New layout is used for display HTTP errors, about Opera page and some of the "opera:command" page. Just go to "Help-> About Opera" via the menu and you'll know what I mean. Clean and slack layout I would say.
Widgets ? Not that cool as Opera advertised... The only widget that I found practical would be the BBC News Reader widget. I still can't see the point why or for what purpose they make widget exists in Opera. I remembered before that, Opera claims that "... widget will remains running even though Opera is closed...". But now Opera kills all the widget before closing itself =) Did the developers realized that there is no point for widgets to run around without Opera running ? I don't see native Bittorrent support in v9.0 as a great help out to me, since I use other BT client for that because I believe those clients are better than Opera when it comes to large files. However, I do see that this Bittorrent support is a smack on Opera's rival face - see what I'm capable of... world's first web browser with BT support ! hehe...
After upgrading to 9.0, I need to change my CTRL+N and CTRL+D habit to CTRL+T and CTRL+B. It's years that I used that 2 keyboard shortcuts and it's difficult for me to change over. I guess I'll just stop writing and continue playing with it for sometime. My thanks to Opera development team, great job !
*update 2006.6.22* dammit.. my notes in Opera is gone too... =(

Opera 9.0 is out ! - 11:25 am
public release
Browser , Software - DaRen
Opera Software today released Opera 9, its newest Web browser for PCs. You can download it free in more than 25 languages for Windows, Mac, Linux and other platforms from www.opera.com. Opera 9 enhances the way you access, share and use online content by including innovative widgets - fun, small and useful Web programs - and support for BitTorrent™, the popular file distribution technology. Even while adding these improvements, Opera 9 maintains the security and speed millions of Opera fans have come to expect.
"For Opera 9, we worked hard to push the limits of what people expect from a Web browser, with increased speed, new Web standards support and innovative features such as widgets and BitTorrent," said Jon S. von Tetzchner, CEO, Opera Software.
"Even though we shaped this browser for the Web’s future, we have the powerful features people want and need for their surfing today. I truly feel Opera 9 has something for everyone."
 Opera 9.0
Can't wait till I get home and upgrade my Opera to 9.0 . Grab a copy for yourself here.

My random thoughts & feelings... - 6:17 pm
while waiting for pizzas
Personal - DaRen
It rain for like whole day today. I just love this kind of weather. It's not heavy rain, but just light shower that rains non-stop through out the whole day. The only thing that would make it perfect is a short and warm weather in the morning. I prefer to wake up in a sunny morning instead of sky full of dark clouds. Just hope it will be "my way" on tomorrow.
