King Kong : The Eigth Wonder - 2:08 am
Movie - DaRen
Plot Outline
Set in the 1930s, a film crew filming a movie on an uncharted island stumble upon many strange, dangerous creatures, including 'Kong', a giant ape who captures the lead actress.
Just came back from the movie of King Kong. Im not a very picky guy, to me, King Kong is a good movie to watch.
It's pretty boring at first, but when their adventure begins (well, thanks to the film director, Carl) you just can't stop watching it. Nice animation and special effects, also loved the King Kong's kung fu style when it's fighting the 3 T-Rex in the jungle. Also there are a few breathtaking scene that makes you hold your breath in horror. At times, I think Kong is funny and cute but it's not the case when you're the innocent one who got stepped by it... hehe...
Well since they got the eight wonder thing, the story is not real, but I just can't understand some things like:
- How did they track down Kong in the jungle ??? Jack brings nothing with him, no weapon, no compass, but he still manage to find Kong and Ann... that's crap...
- Why all the crews' clothes are always so clean all day long? I'll get more mud stain on my clothes in just one round of paintball game compare to them.. hmm, like Ann's clothes, do you think Kong ever washes it hands ?? why she still looks clean after Kong grabbed her N times?? not to mention Kong grabbed her using its foot a few times...
- When Jack came to rescue Ann and trying to escape via a "suddenly appear tarzan rope"... it reminds me the story of a princess got trapped in a tower and the princess makes a rope out of clothes and the knight climbs up and kill the demon.. come on, can't they think of a better one ??
- Where's the natives when they get back to the shore ?? population wiped out by a few tommy gun ?? cut cost ?? retrenchment ?? fired ??
The story is quite touching but there are too many long, lingering stares between Ann and Kong. A few times it's fine, the rest are just making me yawning. Towards the ending, Kong climbs up Empire State Building, instead of World Trade Center in the old King Kong movie. That's because of the tragic events of September 11, Empire State Building is once again New York's tallest building.

It wasn't the airplanes; beauty killed the beast.
There is always a relationship between beauty and beast :O Planning to watch Narnia, it's not screening in local cinemas yet.
Swollen tooth gum - 11:49 pm
Personal - DaRen
Not feeling well today, stupid sore throat and swollen gum near my wisdom teeth (again).. sigh...It always got swollen on the left hand side, I'm guessing because that particular wisdom teeth's position is "blocking" the gum.
I'm trying to drink more water, gurgle with salt water, drink a little bit honey, don't sleep late... hopefully I can recover fast...
Any other good way to cure this fast?
Simple PHP Blog - 6:38 pm
Coding , PHP , Website Intro - DaRen
Just found a PHP blog project in SourceForge - Simple PHP Blog. It doesn't require a database, uses flat text files, and looked nice. Runs on PHP 4.
Looks simple and nice to me, but flat text file eh ?? I'm not really a big fan of it... imagine writing extra coding to process text file and performance degradation when you're dealing with large scale entries.
I haven't test the whole thing. But , it's not bad for short term blogging by just looking at their page though. Simple PHP Blog got the basic features like leave comment, trackback, permalink, search function, RSS feed and etc.
I'll check their admin control panel later on and study their code when I got enough time.
Visit their SourceForge project page, or their web page.
Mozilla Editor - 4:09 pm
Browser , Computing , Internet , Standards , Website Intro - DaRen
via woeisiong:
It seems that Mozilla is building it's own editor. I suppose that's a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) web-based editor.
Quote:The Mozilla editor provides HTML and plain text editing functionality in Gecko-based applications.
This is a good thing to FireFox and other gecko-based browser... BUT, what about IE and Opera ?? They aren't gecko-based. Does that means that they will not be able to use it ?? hmm ??
I've seen a few WYSIWYG but most of them are pretty buggy. They all consist of "complicated and sophisticated" things (codes, lol) in it, but they have the problems of cross-browser-compatibility.
Anyway, aren't those WYSIWYG editor and BBCode tags exists solely for one purpose ? To make lazy people's life easier =)
Visit the Mozilla Editor and the live demo (Note: I got a feeling the demo page is out-dated).
Google's personalized page - 9:21 pm
Computing , Internet , Website Intro - DaRen
Set up Google as your homepage and read your multiple favourite RSS on your personalized page! You can choose what you love to read and what you don't want. Examples are your local weather forecast, top news stories, specific RSS feed and etc.
Google has this freely-drag-and-arrange feature that allows you to arrange the layout. Sounds cool eh? But before you can use the service, you gotna have a google account, eg Gmail account.
Visit Google Personalized Page, login and start to personalize!
E-mail to yourself 20 years later - 12:26 am
Cool Stuff , Internet , Personal , Website Intro - DaRen
Do you have anything to say to yourself after 20 years later ?? Check this out :
Quote (Wired News):
It's a time capsule of your thoughts, sent to yourself -- a future self, that is. A couple of young web entrepreneurs create a website that lets people send e-mail to themselves, 20 years hence.

I've just "send out" an e-mail, dated December 2006, to myself. I'll be sending an email to my 20-years-later me after I received the email next year.

RSS - 4:11 pm
Computing , Internet , Site Issue , Standards - DaRen
Lately I'm interested in RSS and I'm considering to prioritize and make it the first thing on my todo list.
RSS
(Really Simple Syndication) A syndication format that was developed by Netscape in 1999 and became very popular for aggregating updates to blogs and the latest news from Web sites. RSS has also stood for "Rich Site Summary" and "RDF Site Summary."
RSS is a family of XML file formats and the information is delivered as an XML file called RSS feed, webfeed, RSS stream, or RSS channel.
Drop me a line if you know any good PHP RSS parser/reader/aggregator. I'm also interested in RSS feed generator in PHP. I wanna learn more about RSS feed and put up a feed on my site.
Some feed parsers that "looks" good among others:
- Magpie RSS - packed with hell lots of features and functions, used by alot of RSS software
- LastRSS - light weight RSS parser
- Lilina News Aggregator - some sort of feeds on feeds, using Magpie library
- Tiny Tiny RSS - not tiny at all, web based RSS reader works like desktop version. Using Magpie library
Feed generator/writer:
... haven't test them though..
Little grumbling... - 3:01 pm

New design approach - 2:54 am
Coding , PHP , Site Issue , Site Updates , Standards - DaRen
I'm updating my site again. I've been working on the core functions / classes. Yes, the CORE part... The major ones are like user authentication and database connection. I've unified all database access under one global variable, avoiding multiple DB connection objects created locally (class/function scope). The good thing about ? it saves memory and I can know how many SQL queries are made to construct a page. Scroll down to the very bottom and you can see how like "N queries made". Quite surprising though... some pages used like 35 SQL queries... o.O omg... gotna refine them later...
My current approach [ Hide ] -------site_management.php---------------
// The class of "everything", contains db connection
// and other authentication
class site_management
{
var $DB_OBJECT;
function site_management()
{
// Let's say MYSQL_DB is your class that contains
// all functions to access/manipulate the database
$this->DB_OBJECT = new MYSQL_DB();
}
}
-------foo.php--------------------
// Some class that requires access to database
class foo
{
// Internal database connection object
var $_db_object;
function foo()
{
// If global variable $SITE->DB_OBJECT exists, make reference
// to it otherwise instantiate a new copy locally
if (isset($GLOBALS['SITE']) && $GLOBALS['SITE']->DB_OBJECT)
$this->_db_object =& $GLOBALS['SITE']->DB_OBJECT;
else
$this->_db_object = new MYSQL_DB();
}
function bar()
{
// You need to perform sql query here
$this->_db_object->query($sql); // for example
// ...
}
}
------test.php-------------------
// The above two class is located in different files
// and below is also in a seperate script file
<?php
$SITE = new site_management();
$foo_obj = new foo();
$foo_obj->bar();
?>
My old way [ Hide ] -------foo.php--------------------
// Some class that requires access to database
class foo
{
// Internal database connection object
var $_db_object;
function foo()
{
// Instantiate a new copy locally
$this->_db_object = new MYSQL_DB();
}
}
Let me know what you think about this. You can also leave me a message here.
Read more about referencing global variable:

http://www.obdev.at/developers/articles/00002.html
In authentication part I removed ALL spaghetti-style-redirection when transfering a user through a login/logout. In short, no more hidden values inside <form> to track user, session is used instead. Clean code and it works! Hopefully things will work fine... even though I'm extremely carefully when touching the core part, because almost everything are built on top of it.
You should also have notice the "N visitor(s) online now" thing on the left navigation menu. Although most of the time there is only 1 visitor, me myself Talking about the navigation menu, I'm adding options to show/hide the menu with javascript. See that red button with a 'X' ? That's what I'm talking about.
Others updates are misc and minor updates in template/admin control panel.
Weather updates - 4:34 pm
Computing , Cool Stuff , Internet , Site Issue , Site Updates , Website Intro - DaRen
I've added weather updates on mysite, you can find them in top most of my page, on the bottom most of left navigation menu and also here for detailed info.
The latest weather datas are provided by Weather.com .
If you interested in building your own weather reports (web), check out here http://www.w3.weather.com/services/xmloap.html. It's a free registration and Weather.com only requires your email address. After then you can use the partner ID and license key provided and get access to the latest weather data, via xml feed ;)
